Thomas Macdonough became a Lieutenant because of his actions in the raid on the Philadelphia. Then Macdonough served on the 18-gun brig USS Syren. In 1806 Macdonough was in charge of the construction of several gunboats in Middletown, Connecticut. Then in 1807-1808 Macdonough enforced the Embargo act on Atlantic Blockade. In the next year of 1809 Macdonough served aboard the USS Essex. After that Macdonough supervised the construction of several gunboats in Middletown Connecticut. Then he returned to Middletown Connecticut where he was placed in charge of several gunboats again. There he met Lucy Ann Shaler who he later married.
